What is Divorce and How Does Divorce Differ from Annulment?

Divorce is the process of terminating the marital union and dissolving the matrimonial bonds.  An annulment declares the marriage null and void. Sometimes when there is a divorce, it is set up so that one spouse pays the other spousal (maintenance) support or child support. Additional requirements may include property division according to what the court deems equitable, along with the distribution of retirement and bank accounts. With respect to an annulment, it is usually a retroactive process in which the marriage is as if it never happened

At Newland & Newland, LLP, we help clients make informed legal decisions about divorce. Whether you are planning to get a divorce, or would like to understand your rights in a divorce, contact us to learn more about the divorce process. Call us today to arrange a free consultation.

Must Divorce Always Be Combative?

Divorce does not need to be a battle. Quite often, marital conflicts can be resolved in a timely manner without the expense and stress of litigation. The end of  a marital relationship is painful enough on a family. Alternative dispute resolution techniques can minimize the pain and help families cope with divorce. One alternative method used to resolve marital disputes is collaborative law. Collaborative law offers parties to a divorce to end their marriage with greater privacy and less court involvement. This is usually considered a high priority for families.

A team of specially trained professionals can also help guide and support divorcing couples through the problem solving process.
