What To Do If Someone You Love is Being Hurt or Exploited

There is no reason anyone should be abused while under the care of another person, no matter if the abuse is due to negligence, suspicious accidents, financial exploitation, health care fraud, poor living conditions or direct mistreatment. If you have suspicions of nursing home abuse, you must take immediate action, whether the abuse is happening to you or a loved one.

1. Look for physical, emotional and financial warning signs.  If anything seems out of the ordinary, report it to the nursing home administration immediately.
2. Examine the patient’s medications to ensure that all prescriptions are being regularly administered. Cross-reference the date of the prescription and the daily dosage to ensure that your loved one is being treated according to doctor’s orders.
3. Regularly check an elder’s bank accounts, credit card transactions and bills to make sure that financial fraud is not being committed.
4. Visit as often as you can to spend time with your relative but to also examine the conditions of the nursing home at various times of day and night.
