Types of Slip and Fall Injuries
Slip and fall injuries are some of the most common types of cases we deal with at Newland & Newland, LLP. For more than 50 combined years, we have helped clients throughout the Chicagoland area (Kane County, Cook County, Will County, McHenry County and Lake County) recover damages as a result of injuries suffered through the fault or negligence of another party. Anyone can slip and fall on a wet floor or icy sidewalk, and elderly people are even more susceptible to serious injuries after falls. Because of the nature of these accidents, a variety of injuries can occur, ranging from mild to catastrophic:
- Broken bones, cuts, bruises or sprains
- Back and neck injuries
- Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)
- Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)
- Spinal cord injury (with partial or full paralysis)
MTBI is also known as a concussion. After you hit your head as the result of a slip and fall accident, you may experience a number of symptoms, including a brief loss of consciousness, headache, memory loss, confusion, lightheadedness, blurred vision, fatigue and sensitivity to light and sound. Some people will dismiss this as just being “shaken up” after a fall, but it is a serious medical condition and should be treated by a doctor immediately.
TBI can cause grave injuries. TBI occurs when a blow to the head causes the brain to collide with the skull, damaging the brain. Symptoms may not present themselves immediately, so in the days after a slip and fall, it is vital that you look for symptoms of MTBI as well as convulsions, seizures, dilation of pupils, inability to wake up, slurred speech, increased confusion and loss of coordination.
Spinal Cord Injury
A blow to the spine that breaks or dislocates vertebrae in your back can cause temporary or permanent paralysis, even quadriplegia or paraplegia. Symptoms to look for include extreme pain in the back, loss of sensation in limbs (complete or partial), trouble breathing or trouble completing normal bowel functions.
