Lawyers for Victims of Foodborne Illnesses in Rolling Meadows and Cook County, IL

Food poisoning, sometimes referred to as foodborne illness, is a major problem in today's fast-paced, convenience-oriented society. Many residents of Northern Illinois regularly eat on the go, and they expect the food that they buy to be safe and free from harmful contaminations. Similarly, grocery store customers expect produce and other products to be fresh, nutritious, and safe as well. Unfortunately, this is not always the case, and thousands of people are poisoned by tainted food each year. Large-scale product recalls related to contamination concerns are also common. At Newland & Newland, LLP, our attorneys are committed to holding food growers, processors, and preparers responsible when their products are contaminated and cause consumers to become ill.

Understanding Foodborne Illness

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that more than 250 different types of foodborne diseases have been identified by researchers. Most such illnesses are infections that are caused by viruses, bacteria, and parasites, but food can also be contaminated by toxins and harmful chemicals as well. Any person can contract a foodborne illness from contaminated food, but those with weak or compromised immune systems are at an increased risk, including young children, pregnant women, older adults, and those with liver or kidney disease, diabetes, or HIV/AIDS.

Our firm has secured over $1 million for victims of food poisoning outbreaks in Illinois and Wisconsin.

According to the CDC, about 48 million people get sick from contaminated food each year. Most people who experience food poisoning exhibit the common symptoms of nausea, stomach cramps, vomiting, and diarrhea, but they usually recover fairly quickly without the need for medical attention. However, some 128,000 people per year are hospitalized for foodborne illnesses, and about 3,000 people die.

Attorney Gary A. Newland and his team have been helping victims of food poisoning in Northern Illinois for nearly three decades. We have the knowledge, experience, and skill to assist you and your family when you have suffered an illness related to food contaminated by germs such as:

  • Salmonella;
  • Norovirus;
  • Listeria;
  • Escherichia coli, or E. coli.
  • Campylobacter;
  • Clostridium perfingens;
  • Clostridium botulinum, or botulism; and
  • Staphylococcus aureus, or staph.

Building a Case for Compensation in Schaumburg and Des Plaines

At Newland & Newland, LLP, we understand that food producers, transporters, and distributors have a responsibility to keep their products safe for human consumption. When food products are not processed, stored, or prepared properly, contamination can occur quickly, and it is the consumers who suffer the most.

Collecting compensation in a foodborne illness case is not easy because doing so requires proving that negligence occurred somewhere in the process of production, storage, or preparation. Our firm, however, is up to the challenge. We maintain a large network of toxicologists, microbiologists, and other food experts to help us build a case designed to get you the compensation you deserve for your illness.
