Lawsuits Filed against Testosterone Therapy Makers

Posted on in Defective Prescription Drugs

Several forms of testosterone therapy have come under fire lately due to concerns for patient safety. According to WebMD, while the practice of prescribing hormonal therapy treatment to men with low testosterone has recently become more and more common, the long-term safety and side effects are not yet clear.

This year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced that it now requires such products to add a general warning about potential blood clots in the veins that are known to occur with certain testosterone therapies. Other therapies are known to result in negative side effects for the heart.

A study published by PLOS ONE has found “a twofold increase in risk of nonfatal heart attack shortly after initiation of testosterone therapy,” when used by men under the age of 65 who suffer from heart disease. However, it is noted that men, ranging in the millions, utilize testosterone as a lifestyle drug as a means to reverse the natural testosterone decrease men experience as they age.

Another type of testosterone therapy, noted by FTMGuide.org, is injectable. These are specially administered by a licensed physician, and will be tailored to meet the specific needs of the patient. This type of testosterone therapy is most commonly used for transsexual women wishing to transition to men.

Epidemiologist William Finkle, the head author of the PLOS ONE study, informed NPR that prior to therapy use, doctors should discuss the risk of heart attack with patients, and that the FDA should “require a warning on the labels of testosterone drugs.”

Regardless, these types of testosterone therapies come with similar risks associated with hormonal treatments and gel application, and it is now being reported that lawsuits are being filed against the makers of these therapies, noting improper warning of the possible risks. And with that said, no matter the reason for seeking Low-T therapy, it is crucial to speak with a physician and learn all available options and potential risks.

If you have done this and have suffered a negative side effect of testosterone therapy gel, you may be eligible for compensation. This is especially true if you were not made sufficiently aware of the risks associated with the treatment. Do not go through it alone.
